New research from luxury tour operators True Luxury Travel has found the holiday destinations that are growing and falling in popularity, according to Google.
The company compiled their newly released Global Travel Search Index by using Google Trends to chart the search interest for destination specific holiday search terms since 2004.
The research has found Cape Verde to be the holiday destination which has shown the greatest increase in search interest since 2004, with the phrase 'Cape Verde Holidays' showing a 3000% increase in search interest since 2004.
The increased search interest in Cape Verde is in line with tourism figures which show the country experienced a 13.6% rise in foreign visitors in 2016, based on the previous year.
Cape Verde's increasing popularity could be attributed to a greater availability of new direct flight routes from the UK to the island in recent years.
The UAE showed the second-greatest increase in search interest, with a 681% rise in search interest between 2004-2016. Considering the vast development of UAE regions in recent years, plus the rise in expats relocating to the area, it is not surprising to see such a large growth in search interest for the UAE.
The UAE economy has doubled between 2006-2016 and the UAE is now the tenth most popular destination for expats.
On the other end of the scale, Libya is the country which has shown the greatest decrease in search interest, with an 89% decrease in search interest since 2004.
Tunisia has also displayed a drastic decrease in search interest since 2004, with search interest for the phrase 'Tunisia holidays' falling 88% since 2004.
The country experienced a particularly drastic drop in search interest in 2016, following the tragic terror attack in 2015. Between 2015 and 2016 there was a 78% drop in search interest for Tunisia holidays.
