Last week saw the unveiling of a new recycling initiative on six holiday parks in Wales. Haven Holiday's have teamed up with Wrap Cymru (Waste & Resources Action Programme in Wales) to help its 1,000,000 visitors recycle even more on holiday.
The launch event took place on 20 June at Haven's Hafan Y Mor holiday park in Pwllheli and was attended by Dewi Davis from the Welsh Tourism Partnership along with holidaymakers and owners on the park. In true Haven fashion fun and games took place with Rory the tiger with kids making collages from recycled materials.
The new containers were quickly put into action too as guests immediately took the opportunity to pop their waste in the appropriate container.
General Manager Andrew Baker said "Visitors already had the opportunity to recycle inside their accommodation but now with these new containers they have the opportunity to recycle their cans, plastic bottles, newspapers and cardboard whenever they are out and about across the parks."
The project received a £43,240 grant from WRAP Cymru's Recycle on the Go scheme, which is designed to provide recycling facilities for people to use when they're out and about. The scheme provided grants for businesses and other organisations which want to develop recycling facilities for visitors.
As members of the Green Tourism Business scheme Haven take their environmental responsibilities seriously. This scheme sees the introduction of brand new recycling containers which are manufactured in the UK and incorporate 66% of recycled material in their construction.
Daniel Coward is just one of four Eco Warriors employed by Haven. Daniel said "Increasing recycling levels is one of the most effective ways to bring us closer to our goal of operating sustainably. Our aim is to cut our carbon footprint by 10% this year and by 50% in 2020 and schemes like this one will help us on our journey."
WRAP Cymru Recycle on the Go Project Manager Ruth Llewellyn said:
'If Wales is to reach its target of recycling 70 per cent of its waste by 2025, we can't just recycle when we're at home. It's essential that we recycle when we're out and about - including on holiday.
That's why I'm delighted that Haven Holidays is the first holiday park operator to receive a Recycle on the Go grant in Wales. With six parks across Wales it presents a great opportunity to get its many visitors into the recycling habit and I look forward to continuing to work with the company to help make the parks even greener.'
The project has been a collaborative initiative between Wrap Cymru and Haven Holidays, with significant input from Wybone Ltd who have created a bespoke recycling container tailored to the requirements of Haven Holidays and Plan Recycling Consulting who have provided project management to the overall programme from its inception through to launch and will continue to monitor the project going forward.
