In 1917, only five years after New Mexico became a state, the New Mexico Museum of Art opened as the first state run museum in the country. On November 25, 2017, the New Mexico Museum of Art will hold a once-in-a-century celebration to commemorate 100 years of preserving and showcasing art in New Mexico and will reopen a newly restored museum building with three new exhibits demonstrating the past and future of New Mexican art. The birthday celebration, will kick off a yearlong series of 100 programs museum staff will put on throughout the next 364 days to keep the party going until November 2018.
