New Hotels: Venice, Madrid & Istanbul

New Villas: Lombardy & Tuscany

New Rooms: Lake District & York

NEW HOTEL: Ca' di Dio, Venice

Just a short distance from Piazza San Marco, you will find the historic Ca' di Dio, opening this spring. The hotel is located in a privileged position, at the entrance to the Arsenale area, known as the Contemporary Art District of Venice, a place linked to the prestigious Biennale. The fascinating history of the building dates back to 1272, and the project has been curated by the studio of the internationally renowned architect Patricia Urquiola, with the aim of creating an original and distinctive concept: a Venetian “house”, linked to the history of the city.

Although contemporary in style, which is unusual for Venice, when strolling through the common areas, guests will be able to admire the bright travertine and perfectly preserved frescoes. The hotel features many places for guests to relax whilst staying in Venice; an 'altana' - covered roof-terrace, common in medieval Venice, which is the perfect place from which to admire the sights of the city, two internal courtyards, which will be home to one restaurant serving light and quick snacks throughout the day, and a spacious reading room. There will be a second, outdoor restaurant overlooking the lagoon, towards the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The cuisine will be inspired by typical Venetian dishes, revisited with a modern touch yet respecting the seasonality of the ingredients, thanks to the vegetable garden in the internal courtyard. Access to the hotel from the side stream allows direct docking of boats.

Ca' di Dio will offer rooms from €460 per night on a B&B basis, based on two people sharing. v-retreats.com/en/ca-di-dio/

NEW ROOMS: The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton, North Yorkshire is located between bustling Harrogate and the historic city of York. Whilst the pub isn't new, The Alice recently unveiled 12 new rooms for guests to stay in.

The Alice is a much-loved local pub, named after a famous racehorse that galloped to glory by winning the Ascot Gold Vase, the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup in 1844. Just when it looked as though time was about to be called on the historic inn after a series of failed attempts to make it viable, a surprise buyer rode to the rescue and Nun Monkton resident Kate Harpin bought the pub in 2013 with the sole intention of keeping her local alive. Over the past 7 years she has made many improvements including renovation, a bigger kitchen and a barn for private events, which have helped attract a loyal following. The Alice is well known for its food, and has entries in both the Good Food Guide and Michelin Guide.

More recently, they have reconfigured and upgraded the existing guest rooms in the pub and designed and built new accommodation in the grounds in keeping with the rural surroundings. The project has taken 20 months to complete, and was finished in the first lockdown, meaning that they haven't had their time to shine to I hope we can still consider them new! The now 12 guest rooms are split between the Grade II listed pub and new-build garden rooms which are constructed from home grown Douglas fir and finished inside and out with timber. They were built to mirror three agricultural buildings – one is a stable-style, the other looks like a field barn and the third an agricultural store. The beer garden has also been newly landscaped and a wood-fired oven (imported from Italy) installed where a range of sourdough pizzas will be prepared with toppings including Yorkshire Fettle cheese, chargrilled courgettes, garlic, mint, parsley and lemon.

Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on 2 adults sharing on a B&B basis. thealicehawthorn.com
