New Gastro Market Opens in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca

San Juan Gastronomic Market has opened in Palma de Mallorca in the emblematic S'Escorxador cultural centre.

Originally designed at the start of the 20th century as the city's central slaughterhouse, S'Escorxador has long been known for its design credentials winning recognition from the National Exhibition of Fine Art in 1906.

Today the light and airy building merges original features with contemporary design elements to create a modernist feel in a fantastically central location just a 10 minute walk from Plaça Espanya.

Officially opened last month in the Balearic capital of Palma, the market offers tapas as well as traditional Spanish market supplies with 17 food stalls, a cocktail bar, coffee stall and patisserie.

Visitors can enjoy fresh fish and seafood, hams, sausages and cold cuts, jams, marinades and pickles, Basque Pintxos and Mallorcan rice dishes as well as other traditional tapas and international cuisine.

The cocktail bar, aptly called the San Juan Cóctel Club occupies one wing of the building and is a comfortable space to enjoy a post dinner or after work drink, whilst the spacious outdoor terrace allows al fresco dining, thanks to Palma's Balearic climate.

San Juan Gastronomic Market will host regular food events, cooking classes, private tastings and show cookery.
