New – and Free – Subli'Cimes Festival Kicks Off This Easter in La Plagne

La Plagne

Ever thought of stepping off the snow and into a barrel sauna, lounging under palm trees or jumping on a bouncy castle at the top of a mountain – all whilst at over 1,000 metres? This season, the wacky resort of La Plagne (in the French Alps) – which has already brought a Hot Igloo, Yeti Race, hay sledging, béret throwing and boxer-short racing to its snowy peaks – has now gone one step further.

Covering six peaks and a multitude of experiences, the brand-new Subli'Cimes festival (5 - 16 April) has been created to appeal to all types of mountain lover. Intended to be an annual event, enjoy the first-ever festival's impressive array of attractions, set up across La Plagne's 225 km of slopes, including DJs, bungee ejections, a barbeque, 'magical' villages, Taï Chi sessions, and huskies and reindeer – to name but a few.

Says Candice Gilg, La Plagne's Promotions & Communications Officer: “The Subli'Cimes festival has been created to promote spring skiing in La Plagne and the benefits of booking a holiday later in the season. The pop-up entertainment across our snow-sure resort will last for two weeks, and is ideal for any age group and skiing ability – as long as you can navigate a blue run! We hope this new, annual festival will show off just how much fun and unique it is in La Plagne.”

Subli'Cimes festival: the lowdown

For teens and adults…

From chairlift to deckchair – located at the top of the Becoin chairlift from Plagne Centre

Sit back and relax in a deckchair under palm trees, savouring a selection of delicious treats from the barbeque and sipping a non-alcoholic cocktail. Make the most of 'living the high life' at over 2,000 metres – surrounded by panoramic mountain views – while enjoying the skilled DJs, performers, dancers and musicians in a 'summer seaside' atmosphere.

Push your limits in the adrenalin zone – en route to the Glacier de la Chiaupe, near the top of Plagne-Bellecôte

Experience a brief sensation of weightlessness on the bungee ejection or try free-falling from a bucket lift onto a huge-inflated mattress. And, if your courage waivers, simply stroll to the nearby restaurant and sample some delicious Savoyard-style dishes or rest at one of the picnic tables to cheer on your family and friends while they take the plunge.

Find your mountain Zen – nestled at the top of the high-speed Arpette chairlift from Plagne-Bellecôte

Unclip your skis (or snowboard) and settle down for a calming meditation session while listening to relaxing music. Alternatively, make the most of the skilled masseurs from Montpellier's School of Physiotherapy, learn the basics of Taï Chi and don't forget your swimsuit for the warming barrel sauna. (Complimentary changing rooms, showers and towels are available.)

For little ones (and big kids!)…

A 'magical' peak in La Plagne – hidden at the top of Le Fornelet chairlift from Plagne Montalbert, or Les Adrets chairlift from Aime 2000…

“If you go down to the woods today” a 'magical' peak awaits. Watch mind-boggling magic tricks, rummage through the dressing-up box containing a wonderful selection of costumes for children, then take them to have their face painted – completing their disguise. Surrounded by enchanting sculptures made from wood and snow, and with delicious aromas emanating from the toffee apples being prepared close by, it promises to be a supernatural experience.

Piste-side party – to be found at the top of the Rossa chairlift from Champagny en Vanoise

Brimming with bouncy castles and decorated with an incredible assortment of balloon sculptures, stop off at this ultimate children's party. Purposely placed on a gentle slope – and accessed by several easy blue runs – parents can relax at the picnic tables and benches while the children treat themselves to candy floss and popcorn, gaze in awe at the jugglers and balloon benders, plus try out the sledges.

La Plagne's Lapland – situated at the top of La Grande Rochette, reached by the Funiplagne gondola from Plagne Centre

Immerse yourself in the 'Far North' experience, complete with reindeer and huskies, in a Lapland-style village. Creative workshops will keep younger members of the family occupied, making antlers, colouring in winter-themed landscapes and joining in with educational games, as will exhibitions and informative talks for all age groups.

Subli'Cimes festival runs from 5-16 April. One week's self-catering costs from €323 pp / approx. £242 pp (three sharing) including ski pass. Return flights (London-Geneva) from £127 pp with easyJet.
