New Food Guide Holds the Key to a Hiker's Heart on the West Highland Way

Wilderness Scotland

Wilderness Scotland knows that refuelling is essential to a good day's walking and has launched the first-ever interactive Food Guide to the West Highland Way. The brand new online resource from the adventure travel operator shows that it is possible to get off-the-beaten track while keeping great quality Scottish sustenance firmly on track throughout the 96-mile, long-distance trail.

This completely free foodie guide has solved the age-old problem of where to eat on the West Highland Way, a classic long distance trail which stretches from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William in the Highlands. The route, now ideal for trekking foodies, travels along the 'bonnie banks' of Loch Lomond, across the atmospheric Rannoch Moor, past dramatic Glencoe and over the high pass of the Devil's Staircase before finishing in Fort William, at the foot of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

The new guide allows walkers to discover some of Scotland's most inspiring landscapes without neglecting their stomach as the guide pinpoints the best foodie spots from restaurants to pubs, breweries to distilleries and sweet-smelling bakeries. There are even recommendations for local fishing spots.

Ideal for independent walkers who enjoy stocking up on supplies from local farm shops and markets, there are options for all tastes from a chippy to a haggis breakfast.  A wide range of budgets are catered for, with recommended restaurant menus starting at £5 per head, while some of the top-end meals cost upwards of £20.

So much more than a restaurant guide, the mobile-friendly resource can be slipped easily in and out of a pocket or daypack making it a handy reference while on the move.  One-touch icons provide straightforward content and links for additional depth.  Search for individual recommendations with pop-out windows which bring up prices, menu highlights, directions via google maps, and phone numbers and websites for booking ahead.

SELF-GUIDED WALKING HOLIDAY

For those who like to have the hard work taken out of the planning process, Wilderness Scotland offers eight nights' self-guided walking on the West Highland Way, staying at hand-picked small hotels, guest houses and traditional B&Bs where their luggage will be waiting for them. The trip costs from £695pp based on two sharing, including luggage transfers, OS maps and comprehensive route notes.

Alternatively it is possible to visit all the foodie destinations on the guide on Wilderness Scotland's fully guided trek of the West Highland Way.
