Canal holiday specialist Black Prince is gearing up for a staycation summer by launching a new route for families trying a narrowboat break for the first time.
'High Life' is a four-night short break that starts in Chirk and crosses the highest canal aqueduct in the world, heads through a national park and takes families into the heart of two popular towns to enjoy heritage rail trips and Shropshire's best birdwatching.
The 37-mile out-and-back journey starts with a trip across the 39m high Pontycysllte Aqueduct before reaching the popular town of Llangollen, where families can also head to imposing Chirk Castle. The route then doubles back through the glorious Dee Valley, an official Area of Natural Beauty, to cross Chirk Aqueduct and go through Chirk Tunnel, before taking a final stop at Ellesmere.

With less than five hours of cruising each day, few locks and a variety of attractions along the way, High Life is one of four routes Black Prince recommends as starter-cruises for families.
Leighton Jones, Black Prince operations director says: “This year looks like it will be another staycation summer and we have already seen a huge amount of interest from families considering canal breaks for the first time.
“High Life is the latest in a series of cruises we've created that are designed for families. Most people who haven't tried a narrowboat break before probably think of a canal cruise as a slow-travel amble through the countryside, but the family routes we've launched combine brilliant attractions, stunning scenery and town or city breaks to create a holiday that will live long in the memory.”
High Life is the fourth family-friendly route introduced by Black Prince. Other include Chocs Away from the operator's base at Stoke Prior in Worcestershire; Canal & Castle from Napton in Warwickshire, and Going Potty, which follows the Caldon Canal along the edge of the Peak District.
Black Prince has also teamed up with family adventurer David Mellor to create the Towpath Activity Guide, with 10 on-and-off the boat experiences families can try on their canal cruise. Ideas include map apps for countryside hikes, keeping wildlife journals and handing over the boat controls so kids can be skipper for the day.
