New Era For Nation's Waterways

Canal & River Trust

The Canal & River Trust is delighted to be exhibiting at IMM for the first time this year, offering us the opportunity to speak to travel journalists and influencers about the changes that are afoot on the nation's waterways. We care for 2,000 miles of canals and rivers, but we are more than an ex-government body with the practical role of keeping the network running. Recognising the huge physical and mental health benefits that waterways offer, our focus is increasingly on unlocking this potential for the nation as a waterways and wellbeing charity.

50 years on from the momentous Transport Act which kickstarted the transformation of a declining freight network into a major leisure resource, canals have made seismic leaps in their impact and value, largely thanks to a burgeoning army of passionate volunteers and advocates who continue to further this grassroots phenomenon. From a time when these 'no go' areas were a national embarrassment, to their current vibrancy, hosting nearly 400 million visits each year, as the British population continues to tap into this valuable resource, just what might the next 50 years bring?

Recently published research shows that simply spending time by the waterways can make us all happier and improve life satisfaction, with an equivalent estimated social wellbeing value of £3.8bn per year. With over 50% of the population living within five miles of one of our canals or rivers, our network is accessible to many. Whether used for a family day out, a holiday, for fitness or commuting, the Canal & River Trust is working hard to create places that can be used and enjoyed by everyone.

A representative from Drifters (a consortium of boat hire companies covering two-thirds of the market) will also be in attendance on our stand to discuss press trips opportunities on Britain's waterways. www.canalrivertrust.org.uk and www.drifters.co.uk
