New Colorado Resort Offers Luxury and the Great Outdoors

Keyah Grande

Pagosa Springs,Colorado Opened in January 2005, Keyah Grande has introduced new standards of luxury, style and dining to Colorado, all discreetly tucked away at a location high in the San Juan Mountains. Set on 4,000 spectacularly scenic acres more than 7,000 feet above sea level, this exclusive resort presents a dynamic new experience for the discriminating traveler.

Far From the Madding Crowd Keyah Grande owners Alan and Barbara Sackman saw perfection in the wilderness setting between Durango and Pagosa Springs, and worked for more than four years to create a retreat worthy of its surroundings. An extraordinary tranquility envelops the 18,000-square-foot Guest House. There is elegant Spanish styling in the architecture, and interiors are designed in warm, vibrant colors against a backdrop of cool stone and tile.

The small room count ensures exclusivity, with accommodations offered in just eight guest rooms, each large and grand enough to hold its own against any leading hotel suite. Each one is individually themed to reflect the style and heritage of a destination favored by the owners, whose passion for travel has taken them to every continent. The journeys are reflected in the guest room names: American, China, England, France, Japan, Santa Fe, South Pacific and Spain. Richly textured carpeting, fabrics and furnishings tell a different story in each, creating a showcase for fascinating art and artifacts transported from their countries of origin. Rooms are equipped with surround-sound, WiFi, satellite radio and television, wet bar, ice machine and mini-refrigerator. Fireplaces feature in Spain and South Pacific, and balconies in all the other guest rooms.

Stylish Elegance Barbara Sackman personally oversaw all interior design of the Guest House, working with Keith Baltimore of Baltimore Designs, and her fine eye and exquisite taste are evident in the detailing. In a location as glorious as this, we had to ensure the indoor setting would continue the joyous experience, she commented. We wanted our guests to enjoy a different dcor and ambiance in each room, and to discover beautiful art everywhere. Decorating Keyah Grande really has been a labor of love.

Striking features include hand-carved, 300-year old doors from Spain at the entrance to the Guest House, a custom-designed Dale Chihuly glass sculpture entitled End of the Day and wood-blocked ZuBer wallpaper in the dining salon. Warm reds set the scene in the Great Room, where oversized sofas are lavishly upholstered with charming floral prints, a log fire blazes in the massive limestone fireplace, and a baby grand piano stands ready to fill the room with music. A fine collection of paintings commands attention. - more - The ambiance in the Lounge is one of congeniality, with a 50-inch Plasma TV, card tables and a vintage billiards table, plus a mix of electronic and traditional games to amuse guests of all ages. The Media Room is paneled with 100-year-old burled walnut wood cut from a single tree, which also makes up the bar here, inviting guests to dally over aperitifs or a flight of the chefs signature mini-cocktails. A high spot in every sense is the Flying Deck that seems to extend into the skyperfect for yoga, meditation or an inspiring glass of vintage bubbly. The circular Fire Pit Deck reflects an old African tradition, with rockers set around a cozy bonfire, all perfectly positioned for watching the canvas of the star-filled sky.

Haute Cuisine with Passion Dining is always exciting at Keyah Grande, orchestrated by husband-and-wife team Executive Chefs Aki Kamozawa and H. Alexander Talbot, whose talent for layering flavor and texture pervades all their cooking. Menus change daily to feature seasonal fare, using primarily organic and artisanal ingredients like Blis caviar, truffles from the Perigord, and butter from Animal Farm in Vermont, with which there is a very special relationshipAnimal Farm supplies butter to only two other restaurants: French Laundry in Napa and Per Se in Manhattan. Dining is one of the greatest pleasures of traveling, Alan Sackman feels, and its important that the dining experience here be a grand adventure. Our chefs are perfectionists, and passionate about the creation of each dishif they dont love it, no one else gets to taste it. Among the many intriguing specialties on their five-course dinner menus are Three Pear Soup (with chestnut and maple ravioli, sheep sorrel and white pepper sabayon), Hot and Cold Alaskan Spot Prawns (with sake-cured sea trout caviar and natural prawn jus), Goose Egg Raviolo (with fiddlehead ferns, sauted ramp greens and Piave Vecchio cheese), and Veal Oscar (softshell crab and veal schnitzel with asparagus sauce). Inspired cocktails include lots of original concoctions, among them Persimmon Bellini, Pomegranate Cosmopolitan, and Dark & Stormy (made with Gosling rum and ginger beer in winter or ginger ale in summer). Guests may choose the grandeur of the main dining room or the intimate setting of the smaller dining salon; in both, Versace china, Francis I and Chambray silver, and hand-etched Queen Ann Lace crystal add to the elegance. A wine list with more than 300 carefully selected labels and 2,500 bottles includes fine vintages from South America, Italy and France. The wines of Bordeaux are special favorites of the owners and feature prominently. An open-kitchen policy invites guests to help themselves to early-morning coffee and late-night snacks.
