Borgo Pignano is set in the heart of a picturesque 750-acre organic estate in Tuscany, where Etruscans were the first settlers. The estate is a short drive from the medieval hill towns of Volterra and San Gimignano and only 1 hour's drive from Florence and Pisa.
Accommodation is spread over the estate and includes:
The Villa
This 18th century noble house offers 14 sophisticated rooms and suites, featuring frescoes and elegant antique furnishings
The hamlet
Once the barn, the stables and woodshed, eight beautifully-restored rustic apartments and two cottages are perfect for families, who can take advantage of the kids' pool
La Canonica
Dating back to the 13th century, La Canonica is a three-bedroom house boasting original features including medieval stonework and frescoes
La Fonte
With 7 rooms, a porch overlooking the lake and a private pool, this farmhouse can be booked in its entirety or in four parts
Borgo Pignano has a strong focus on sustainability. All buildings have been restored and decorated using environmentally friendly materials, locally sourced stone, organic plasters and eco-paints. While heating is fuelled by solar panels and chip-fired boilers, the gardens are fed with filtered harvested rainwater and the natural and manmade lakes supply irrigation for the farmland.
Aiming to be self-sufficient, Villa Pignano Restaurant and Al Fresco Restaurant use organic locally sourced and home-grown produce, including olive oil, wine and honey. Breads, pastry and fresh pasta are made with a fine selection of ancient wheat flours produced in the on-site Flour Lab from grains grown on property. In addition, the estate's free-range pigs and hens provide eggs and meats for the restaurants.
The in-house herbalist gathers wild and cultivated herbs for use in the kitchen and for tisanes, perfumes and scented oils used in treatments at their new spa.
Activities offered to guests focus on wellness and include horseback riding, soap-making, yoga and Pilates classes, trekking and biking.
Borgo Pignano has a long-established collaborative relationship with The Royal Drawing School in London. An alumnus is always on site and available for painting classes with guests.
Thanks to the property's strong connection to art, guests have the opportunity to enjoy rotating contemporary art exhibitions at the Pignano Art Gallery, curated every six months.
