Jimmy's Australian Food Adventure, an exciting new series presented by UK food expert Jimmy Doherty, launched on 1st of March 2015 on Britain's digital channel More4. The series, estimated to reach 3.8 million British viewers, explores the unexpected and inspirational tastes and foods of South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
Each of the three episodes follow Jimmy as he discovers the continent's wild plants and foods, explores how the first settlers introduced new tastes to the continent and examines the impact new thinking is having on Australian cuisine.
In South Australia, Jimmy discovers delicious regional produce at Adelaide Central Market and learns how to make kangaroo 'snags' with local producer Richard Gunner. He discovers the mouth-dropping beauty of the Flinders Ranges and joins a camel trek to learn more about the transportation of food across Australia in the early years. A highlight for Jimmy was his visit to Kangaroo Island where he spotted kangaroos and koalas in the wild for the first time and got a lesson in Pavlova making with local chef Kate Sumner.
Jimmy Doherty says: 'Exploring the story of Australia's farmers, food producers and chefs has been inspirational. Australian cuisine is a real fusion of many different cultures. It's almost impossible now to say what a “typical” Australian dish is! But their appetite for innovation and experimentation is a lesson to us all'.
Jimmy was also asked to name his three South Australian highlights which he listed as being:
- Riding a camel in central Flinders Ranges
- Making a pavlova with Kate Sumner on Kangaroo Island
- Making kangaroo sausages with Richard Gunner at Adelaide Farmers Market
He was also asked how he would sum up South Australia's food scene:
- Answer. Australia has a big appetite for desserts which I found out when I helped Kate Sumner make a pavlova in her kitchen on Kangaroo Island.
UK visitor arrivals are up 22% in South Australia, year-end September 2014. Tourism Australia's Regional General Manager UK/N Europe, Denise von Wald, hopes the series will help inspire more Brits to choose Australia as their next holiday destination. “This fantastic series is not only inspiring, but educational, documenting Australia's passion for food dating back to Aboriginal Australia 50,000 years ago. It's an incredibly unique story and ultimately showcases why there's nothing like Australia's incredible landscapes, fresh produce, passionate friendly people and exciting adventures.”
“Jimmy's Australian Food Adventure” was created by Channel 4 in association with Tin Can Island Productions, Tourism Australia and Etihad Airways and supported by Tourism Northern Territory, Tourism Western Australia and the South Australian Tourism Commission. The broadcast is an extension of Tourism Australia's Restaurant Australia campaign in the UK, highlighting the incredible food and wine experiences on offer across the country.
Janice Kurrle, Marketing Manager UK/N Europe, South Australian Tourism Commission says:
“We were thrilled to have been given the opportunity to showcase, through Jimmy, the wonderful and unexpected experiences that South Australia has to offer. We hope that Jimmy's audience will be inspired by this series and will decide they simply have to see South Australia for themselves. Kangaroo Island, which was a special highlight for Jimmy, is really accessible and only 20 minutes from Adelaide. Viewers should look out for a range of great value travel packages being announced in the UK in the coming months.”
The series includes 3 x 60' programs on More4, starting on 1st March and running weekly until 15th March as well as 5 x 60' extended versions running on Channel 4 daytime in April. It will be supported by a competition prize to Australia for two, courtesy of Etihad and a print and digital promotion with a leading national UK publication.
