Oxnard, CA – Team Navy's road to the 2020 Department of Defense Warrior Games runs through Oxnard, California. Approximately 68 guests made up of coaches, athletes and personnel were present in Oxnard for training January 22 to 27. Most of the athletes are active-duty personnel recovering from military activity-related injuries.

Why Oxnard? The Southern California town's year-round sunshine and dry conditions are conducive to practice sessions and successful equipment operation. Not to mention, the adjacent Port Hueneme Naval Base is a prime location for the sports camp.

Residence Inn by Marriott Oxnard River Ridge has a decade-long tradition of hosting the group, which typically travels to Oxnard three times annually. Of the hotelier, Program Analyst Lizbeth Opiola says, “They're good to our guys,” adding that the two-story hotel's many ADA-compliant rooms work great for their group, not to mention the short wait for an elevator. “Pegasus Transit is also really helpful in catering to our special needs,” says Ismael “Marty” Martinez, who heads up Adaptive Sports.

About Navy Wounded Warriors

Navy Wounded Warriors provides a wide range of support services to wounded warriors recovering from serious illness or injury – beginning at bedside and continuing throughout the rest of their lives. Enrollment is voluntary, and service members may refer themselves to the program.

Navy Wounded Warrior helps Sailors and Coast Guardsmen return to duty. When that's not possible, the program works collaboratively with federal agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Labor, as well as state and local organizations, to ensure successful reintegration of service members back into their communities.
