Woodford Cottage, County Fermanagh

This cottage is one of seven lough-side cottages which gather around a courtyard on the Crom Estate, one of Ireland's most important nature reserves. Inside this former piggery you'll find a cosy living room complete with a warming open fire, two bedrooms and a well equipped kitchen. Outside you'll find a forest and acres of waterways and countryside crammed with wildlife, making Woodford the ideal retreat for outdoorsy families.
Half term events: You haven't truly experienced Crom until you have taken a boat trip on Lough Erne. There is no feeling quite like sailing down the Lough, stopping off at an island or two, and seeing the estate from the exceptional vantage point of the water.

This former farmhouse, located next to a working farm is an ideal base for exploring Anglesey, it is located just 1 mile from Cemaes Bay, a beautiful sandy beach and a village with pubs and small shops. The cottage has plenty of downstairs living space and is ideal for a two or a small family. In addition there is a an upstairs reading room with a day bed for relaxation. The garden is unenclosed but offers a slate patio with bench seating and a table. There are fantastic views from the back garden out to sea.

Little Breck Near Amroth, Pembrokeshire

Little Breck is a substantial three-bedroom bungalow in an elevated position with views down the valley towards Amroth. It was built in the early 1970s for Miss Mason, the donor of the Colby Estate to the National Trust. It is approximately 400 metres from the wonderful Colby Woodland Garden and a short distance from the beach at Amroth. The cottage has excellent facilities for guests using a wheelchair.
Half term events: Join National Trust's Chris Harvey-Jones on 25 October for a 2 hour woodland survival session at Colby and learn how to survive in the woods. Try your hand at shelter building, fire lighting, trail marking, tracking, distress signals, basic survival camp cooking, camouflage and concealment and much more. (£5)

1 Compton Farm Cottages, Brook, Isle of Wight

This nineteenth century former farm workers' cottage both sleep four and offer wonderful views out to sea. Situated under the south side of the down they're within easy walking distance from the sea at Compton Bay. Compton Bay is a favourite with surfers and fossil hunters, where low tide reveals dinosaur footprints embedded in the clay.

The Old School House, Falmouth

This beautiful 19th century cottage is lovely and light thanks to the big windows - and as the name suggests, it was once a school and later a reading room. Mill Cottage, Cotehele, St. Dominick, Cornwall

In the heart of the lovely wooded seclusion of the Morden Valley, Mill Cottage is an attractive semi-detached cottage, part of the stylish gabled house with tall brick chimneys that was built in the 1860s for the miller at Cotehele. With abundant wildlife all around, the views from the latticed windows of the cottage are across a flower-rich meadow to the stream and woods beyond. The cottage has its own small, enclosed garden. In the mill building opposite, you can watch the mill in action twice a week, and its excellent stone-ground flour is available to buy: it will make you want to bake!
Half term events: Cotehele have an action packed agenda for half term week, events including pumpkin carving, spooky trails in the Tudor house and even a fright night in the Mill.

Varvassi, The Needles Headland, Isle of Wight

This cottage is part of a row of former coastguard cottages, high on the Needles headland. From the front windows of the cottages you can enjoy amazing views across the Solent to the mainland. There are many walks on the doorstep, including to Tennyson Down home to rare flora and fauna and Compton beach where, if you're lucky you might find a dinosaur bone.
