Narooma Oyster Festival Offers Much More Than Oysters

On Saturday 5 May people will flock to Narooma on the NSW south coast for the Narooma Oyster Festival and the opportunity to meet local oyster farmers and taste the oysters grown in the different estuaries along the coast. But there will be much more to taste!

Some of the region's award winning dairy farmers will be there as well as other local producers including Clyde River Berry Farm, Disaster Bay Chillies, Tanja Olives and mussels from Eden.

Narooma is surrounded by rich dairy farming country which produces award-winning milk, cream, tasty cheeses and flavoursome icecreams. The Tilba Real Dairy and the Bodalla Dairy and Cheese Factory both received prestigious Gold and other awards for their products at the 2018 Sydney Royal Cheese and Dairy Produce Show.

The Tilba Real Dairy won the Champion Cream Award for its double cream and received Gold Awards for its milk, cream and Haloumi cheese. The Bodalla Dairy received a Gold Award for its milk, and Awards for its gumleaf smoked Bodalla cheese and its icecreams, including its 'Dark Chocolate and Tasmanian Pepperberry' icecream – the name alone stimulates the tastebuds.

Narooma Oyster Festival is a big day out for 'foodies' – to taste oysters and other local produce, and to watch and then taste the results of cooking demonstrations by notable chefs. For a traditional food experience, visitors can join Yuin elders and young people at a firepit on the bank of the Wagonga Inlet to cook and taste oysters, abalone, bimbalas, mullet and damper.

With the support of the Katungul Aboriginal Corporation the Festival will also celebrate the local indigenous people.  It will present a Narama Nangara program which will include the Djaadjawan Dancers and displays of the arts and crafts of the local Yuin people. There will be a range of stalls with aboriginal art, craft and merchandise for sale. Not to be missed will be a how-to demonstration of boomerang throwing by Uncle LaddieTimbery.

Throughout the day entertainment, will be provided on-stage and by strolling players. A stunning entertainment lineup includes Beautifully Mad, Claude Hay, Jass Alley, Johnny Huckle, Kate Burke, Laura Targett, Mo Chevy and The Somedays.

Plan to be there on Friday evening for a family, fun-filled evening of free entertainment. Come with your picnic basket and a blanket or select tasty offerings from the food stalls.  The entertainment, sponsored by Club Narooma, will begin with two freestyle motocross demonstrations, local bands and Sydney headliner, Steve Edmonds band, one of the coolest blues/rock bands in Australia. The finale will be a spectacular water-side fireworks display.

Narooma will be a great place to be on that week-end for tasting great food, top entertainment, interesting cultural experiences and family fun. For information go to: www.naroomaoysterfetsival.com
