Murray River Still Ideal For Houseboating Holiday

South Australian Tourism Commission

Houseboating is one of the most relaxing types of holiday on offer, and because of the range of activities available watersports, bushwalks and visits to heritage towns its ideal for all ages, budgets and tastes.

Despite the dry weather across Australia cruising along the Murray River is still a great holiday option this summer.

South Australia is home to some of the most luxurious and well appointed houseboats in the country. The boats are fully self contained with bedrooms, bathrooms, fully-equipped kitchens, air-conditioning, TVs, sun-decks and barbecues, making them a home away from home and the ideal holiday accommodation.

Houseboats are also surprisingly affordable to hire and easy to drive all you need is a drivers license and youre on your way.

South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Bill Spurr says the Murrays water levels are perfect right now for houseboating.

The Murray is flowing well, and you can cruise its full length in South Australia all the way from Murray Bridge to the state border, Mr Spurr says.

Houseboat Hirers Association Chief Executive Officer Peter Tucker says media coverage about drought conditions has led some people to believe water levels in the Murray River are too low for houseboating.

We are receiving enquiries from people who are interested in taking a houseboat holiday, but think the river isnt in good shape and that now isnt a good time to make a booking, he said.

The Murray is flowing well, and with the weather heating up, theres never been a better time to hire a houseboat and cruise the river.
