Mountain Kingdoms offer K2 Base Camp Treks again

Mountain Kingdoms are pleased to say that the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) have amended their travel advice regarding Gilgit, Skardu and the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan, making it possible once more to trek to the base of the world's second highest mountain. K2 is often regarded as far more beautiful and impressive than Everest. It stands surrounded by a host of some of the world's tallest peaks laced together by the largest glaciers outside the Polar Regions. Reaching K2 Base Camp is an expedition in its own right because once the roadhead is left behind the Balti villages are soon lost from sight and the trek takes you into a vast uninhabited region of granite peaks and pinnacles. Huge glaciers lead the visitor to Concordia - a vast junction of many of the largest glaciers, including the famous Baltoro Glacier. K2 stands alone presiding over its acolyte peaks, a vast awesome pyramid creating its own weather systems and a holy grail for the world's toughest and bravest mountaineers.

Mountain Kingdoms is pleased to offer treks into the region again and is offering the first departure this August.

The ultimate Karakoram glacier trek to the base camp of the world's second highest mountain, K2

  • Experience one of the world's greatest treks
  • Spectacular scenery with views of the great peaks of the Karakorams
  • A scenic flight to and from the striking town of Skardu
  • Be one of the first to trek to K2 Base Camp since 2009

The trek to Concordia is one of the great classic walks of the world.  Clustered around this glacial junction are no   fewer   than   six   peaks   over   26,000ft/7,925m,   including   the   awe-inspiring   K2   and   nineteen   over 25,000ft/7,620m. K2 may be the second highest mountain in the world, but climbing it makes summiting Everest look like a walk in the park!

Prior to 1986, getting to Concordia was undoubtedly one of the most gruelling treks in the world. The jeep track from Skardu to Askole has made the journey far more manageable, but you are still travelling in one of the most geologically active parts of the world and nature puts on quite a spectacular show.

We are offering this trek without the more demanding exit over the Gondogoro La for the first time. Whilst the return trek to K2 Base Camp is still strenuous, and can require some scrambling depending on conditions on the glacier, it does not require the use of ice-axe and crampons. You also have the excitement of camping for two nights  at  Broad  Peak  Base  Camp  itself  amidst  all  the  international  climbers  making  their  attempts  on  the summit.
