Coblenz, June 2017: Romantic Germany/Rhineland-Palatinate – British painter William Turner is regarded as one of the fathers of Rhine romanticism. Today, his paintings are still ambassadors for the Middle Rhine Valley, which, with its high density of castles, sloped vineyards and the various localities on the narrow banks, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yet, Rhineland-Palatinate has so much more to offer: Moselle romanticism certainly has as many benefits as 'Father Rhine' – one more reason to introduce the popular Moselle-Saar holiday region.
The Moselle – home to one of the most photographed castles in Germany
Nostalgics from the Moselle region look at the DM500 note they may still possess melancholically. However, this is not only due to its former nominal value. Rather, they miss the vignette of the impressive Eltz Castle, which they were so proud of. Located in a side valley of the Moselle, Eltz Castle is reminiscent of Sleeping Beauty's castle to many a visitor in the area. The stone and timber-frame structure, still in perfect condition, is a source of fascination, especially since it has never been destroyed. The castle has been the family estate of the Counts of Eltz for centuries. Many visitors consider it the Neuschwanstein Castle of Rhineland-Palatinate. NEW - A Mercedes-Benz Sprinter provides a daily shuttle service to the medieval fortress for less mobile tourists from around the world. Identifying feature: the livery of the bus replicates the colours of the timber-frame structure of Eltz Castle.
There was once Little Venice ...
Dolce vita on the Moselle – the city of Saarburg is mildly reminiscent of Venice: the Butter Market, which is partly built on oak stilts, leaves a lasting impression due to the bridges that connect it to the Horse Market. The Leukbach, a babbling river whose gentle murmur rises to a pleasant crescendo as it drops 20 metres in a waterfall in the middle of the city, should also be mentioned. This ambience truly invites you to enjoy a delightful glass of Riesling in the local street cafés and restaurants.
How about a detour to the most famous bow in the Moselle at Bremm? Firstly, this small village is one of the most beautiful villages on the Moselle. Secondly, you can enjoy the magnificent view from Europe's steepest vineyard, the Bremmer Calmont, particularly in autumn, when the glory of Rhineland-Palatinate's Indian summer spreads to the shimmering golden vineyards.
In addition to fairy-tale castles, wonderful little towns dot the Moselle too. Beilstein is a perfect example. No wonder it is called the 'Sleeping Beauty' of the Moselle: it is cosy and looks somewhat sleepy, until it is kissed awake by visitors and reveals itself in all its beauty. The alleys lined with timber-frame houses characterise this town, as they do Bernkastel-Kues, another pearl on the Moselle, creating a unique romantic atmosphere, especially when the Christmas market is held. Finally, Traben-Trarbach enchants its guests with the stark contrast between its stunning Art Nouveau architecture and its rustic cellars.
Arras Castle makes quite different dreams and wishes come true: to spend a night like a king or a princess in an authentic, romantic room in a castle.
Stops at the romantic wineries and vintners characteristic of the area will perfectly round off any visit along the Moselle.
