British Airways and VisitBritain today launched a digital campaign to promote the more unexpected attractions of England, Scotland and Wales. Beginning with 'Red Bus Tour', a series of short videos tease viewers with typical tourist attractions but actually reveal alternative experiences that bring to life a different side of British culture.
With the creative use of SEO, travelers searching for Red Bus Tour may be served up this video that shows a retro red bus with a group of carefree surfers going to Cornwall to catch some waves. More inspirational stories and ideas will be released over the coming weeks.
Plan Your British Adventure
From a treehouse restaurant and a supper club on a London underground 'Tube' carriage, to the oldest record store in the world and overnighting in a former prison, VisitBritain, the national tourist board and British Airways have created a guide on how to explore the unexpected next time you fly.
- In Northern England, Alnwick Gardens has a Treehouse Restaurant, likely one of the most magical and unique restaurants to be found anywhere on the globe. High up in the treetops, with a roaring log fire, the restaurant serves delicious, locally inspired cuisine. As a bonus, it's only minutes away from Alnwick Castle, where many scenes from the movie franchise Harry Potter were filmed. http://www.alnwickgarden.com/explore/whats-here/the-treehouse/restaurant
- When you think Scottish spirits, you tend to think Scottish Whisky, but The Edinburgh Gin Distillery opened in June with great reviews. The Spencerfield Spirit Company opened a bar with an on-site distillery where customers can even make their own bottle of gin. http://www.edinburghgindistillery.co.uk. Interestingly, Gin is the most popular spirit served on board British Airways flights, and this month the airline hosted professional gin tastings in its New York lounges.
- Fancy a five-course tasting menu at a supper club with a twist? For just £39, customers get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dine in a decommissioned London Underground railway carriage. http://www.basementgalley.com//. To try an exclusive five-course tasting menu at 35,000 feet, travellers should choose the British Airways A380 First class cabin, now operating from Washington DC and Los Angeles nonstop to London.
- Located in a converted prison within a medieval castle, the Mal Oxford boutique hotel in Oxford, England is one of the oldest, busiest and trendiest spots in the city. Travelers who feel like they doing hard time in run-of-the-mill hotels can check into this extraordinary slammer where the only hardship is having to go home. https://www.malmaison.com/locations/oxford/
- The oldest record shop in the world, Spiller's Records in Cardiff, Wales was established in 1894. They have a huge selection of music, with everything from jazz and soul to hip-hop and metal on vinyl. Listen to your favourite musicians, and maybe even catch a set. www.spillersrecords.co.uk
