Nevada USA and London UK 2nd June 2014: Mustang Monument is the brainchild of glamorous philanthropist and horse lover, Madeleine Pickens. A successful racehorse breeder of late, her equine passion is now focussed on the preservation of the threatened American Mustang. The result is Mustang Monument; a unique 900 square mile reserve and not-for-profit luxury eco-resort in north-eastern Nevada that provides a home for just over 600 wild horses she has already saved.
Just a few years ago, Madeleine and her then husband, T. Boone Pickens, successfully fought for legislation to close the last horse slaughterhouse in the US. In recognition of their efforts, they received the Equine Advocates' Safe Home Equine Protection Award. On hearing the government was subsequently planning to euthanase or sell more than 30,000 Mustangs for slaughter abroad, Madeleine announced plans to develop a Mustang sanctuary. Named ABC News 'Person of the Week', she inaugurated the charity, 'Saving America's Mustangs', in 2008 to fund the reserve and gain support for the cause.
Back in 1971, Congress recognised mustangs as 'living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West, which continue…to enrich the lives of the American people'. Blazing the trail for luxury philanthropic tourism, Mustang Monument will open its doors to guests on June 15th 2014, ploughing all resources back into the foundation to preserve this vision and these iconic, living symbols for generations to come.
Heritage and history are key to the spirit of Madeleine's ranch, where guests are afforded the sole opportunity in the States to see Mustangs in their natural habitat. Accommodation is in 'one-of-a-kind' hand-painted luxury tipis, environmentally-friendly practises are of paramount importance and activities focus on the priceless legacy of the past. Riding the range wild and free, interacting with Mustangs at close quarters, learning traditional cowboy skills such as calf-roping, exploring original gold mine shafts, horse-drawn and off-road western safaris, archery, hiking and absorbing the gentle arts of moccasin making and native beading are just a few of the unique experiences on offer.
Surrounded by soul-soothing open spaces, huge horizons and dramatic mountain ranges, Mustang Monument offers guests an unforgettable wilderness adventure with a philanthropic heart. Justifiably, Madeleine is profoundly proud of her outback chic retreat and its deep-rooted commitment to the protection of the wild horse and its significance in the history of the American West.
