With over 250 golf courses, Colorado has long been renowned for its outstanding landscaped courses with soaring mountain peaks, cascading hills and golden plains. It is also now home to many major international championships and following on from the successful Solheim Cup in August, the state will host a number of other important championships in 2013 and 2014.
This autumn, Golf Galaxy is hosting Golf Channel Am Tour - Denver Ryder Cup, October 12, at Castle Pines North in Castle Pines.
In September 2014, Cherry Hills Country Club will host the BMW USA Championship (22-25 September) and the Senior National Championship (29 September - 1 October)
Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, is just a 20 minute drive south of Denver and has hosted seven major championships since its opening in 1922. These include the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. The course also has one of the most well-known starting holes in golfing history, where Arnold Palmer famously drove the green in the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open.
The Colorado Golf Club in Parker is home to one of the top Championship courses in the world, stretching up to 7,604 yards and played host to the 71st Senior PGA tournament in 2010. The Colorado Golf Club caters not just for professional golfers but for all levels of ability with a shorter 9-hole course perfect for families or beginners.
Other impressive golf courses include The Club at Crested Butte which is set out across 160 acres of lakes, aspen grooves and mountaintops. The Club caters for players of all skill levels with five sets of tees to provide both a challenge and an opportunity for learning. Mountain style courses are numerous with many having easy access from major resort towns.
Mount Massive Golf Course is the highest elevation golf course in America at 9,640 ft. The course is just a short drive from the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway and provides magnificent views of the state's highest mountains.
For a true championship layout, The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa has been named by Colorado Golf Magazine as the number one public golf course in the state with 11 elevated tees and 41 bunkers.
Alternatively, for something a little different from the traditional golf course, The Four Mile Ranch Club near Cañon City is embedded in an arid landscape providing unique challenges for golfers with greens that play hide and seek behind rocky hogbacks.
Colorado offers a diverse mix of championship golf courses for players of all levels. Elevation is a big part of the golf experience in Colorado, as many of Colorado's golf courses sit at 7,000 feet above sea level and higher. Hence, Colorado's altitude is a big advantage to players who are looking for an extra edge, since drives off the tee in Colorado will travel higher and anywhere from 10-20 per cent farther than courses at sea level.
