Glacier Country, Montana—With scenery varying from jagged mountain peaks to rolling plains and rushing waterfalls, it's no wonder that Western Montana's Glacier Country is home to numerous scenic drives and byways.
“Driving for pleasure is the most popular activity for visitors in Montana,” said Racene Friede, Executive Director of Glacier Country Tourism. “From our major interstate to our paved highways and backcountry roads, this part of the state is filled with plenty of opportunities to explore some of our stunning scenery.”
Along these scenic drives are experiences that are uniquely Montana, with off-the-beaten path treasures that include historic highlights, roadside cafes and small storybook-like towns—each with their own distinct personality.
Tucked in the northern region of Glacier Country and southern Alberta is the Chief Mountain International Highway. A warm season road, this 29-mile route takes travelers through beautiful pine forests and offers vistas of Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Nation, complete with spectacular views of Chief Mountain and Mount Cleveland—the highest peak in the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.
Further to the west is the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway, a 67-mile road that meanders its way through one of the quietest parts of Western Montana. Curving along Lake Koocanusa, this byway includes a side loop that allows drivers and bikers the opportunity to cruise along both sides of the lake.
An alternate and less-traveled route for vehicular travel along Interstate 90 is the 30-mile-long St. Regis-Paradise Scenic Byway. This quiet and jaw-droppingly beautiful drive winds its way along the Clark Fork River and passes through forested terrain before joining Highway 200.
Other remarkable drives include Highway 35 along Flathead Lake (the largest natural freshwater lake in the West), Skalkaho Highway, Seeley-Swan Scenic Drive and the Going-to-the-Sun Road.
