Montana

WHITEFISH, MONT. (Spring 2014) – Expansion of mountain bike trails around Whitefish is enhancing the experience for visitors who enjoy exploring the mountains on two wheels. In addition to the growing Whitefish Trail, as well as five new downhill trails at Whitefish Mountain Resort, a new bike retreat offers lodging deep in the forest north of Whitefish.

“With public and private support of the Whitefish Trail, a major trail expansion at Whitefish Mountain Resort, and the addition of Montana's first bike retreat, Whitefish is now on the map as a truly unique destination for mountain bikers,” said John Muhlfeld, mayor of Whitefish.

The new Whitefish Trail is a regional, multi-partner project to develop a 55-mile recreational trail system through state, federal and private lands, creating a regional amenity that is unique in western Montana. To date, Whitefish Legacy Partners and the City of Whitefish have built 25 miles of trail accessed by seven trail heads close to town, with more trail construction planned for summer 2014.

Last summer, Whitefish Mountain Resort added five new mountain bike trails, which more than double the resort's lift-accessed downhill biking terrain. The new trails add five miles to the bike park bringing the total to nearly 27 miles of freeride and cross-country trails.

Whitefish is also home to Montana's first and only bike retreat. The Whitefish Bike Retreat is centrally located directly off the town's premier Whitefish Trail and close to the area's many downhill, free ride, cross country and single track trails. The Retreat is a unique upscale hostel style lodge that offers both a bunk house with communal cooking facilities, as well as camping.

These numerous offerings create a mountain biking experience that is easily accessible to a variety of skill levels and styles. With a welcoming and knowledgeable staff of bike enthusiasts at local bike shops, the Retreat and at Whitefish Mountain Resort, guests will find the hidden gems to ride, to explore and enjoy.
