24 Feb 2005
From March 18 24 2005 film lovers from around the world will gather in Bermuda for what promises to be one of the best Bermuda International Film Festivals yet. Two Cannes award-winners, Frances Comme une Image (best screenplay) and Irans At Five in the Afternoon (jury prize), join Shape of the Moon and Liberia: An Uncivil War (winner of top prizes at the prestigious Amsterdam documentary festival) in this years 70-film programme. Other films to be shown include Turtles Can Fly, named best film at the San Sebastian film festival, and Les Choristes, Frances foreign film Oscar nominee. A series of theatres in Bermuda will play host to the eighth annual film festival, whose aim is to advance the love of independent film from around the world and create a community welcoming to filmmakers and filmgoers. Bermuda has a reputation for producing a consistently high standard of films and offers a unique atmosphere which continues to charm visiting filmmakers, industry professionals and members of the international press alike. An international jury will be on hand to present awards for best narrative film, best documentary and best short film, while filmgoers will also have the opportunity to vote for the audience choice award. With last years jury boasting a host of high profile names, including acclaimed actor Willem Dafoe, Guillermo Arriaga (screenwriter 21 Grams, Amores Perros) and Carlos Cuaron (screenwriter Y Tu Mama Tambien), this years line-up is set to prove equally impressive. Bermuda has strong links with the film industry making it the perfect location for an event of this caliber. Indeed, Michael Douglas - whose family are Bermudian - and Catherine Zeta Jones have a family home on the Island, while Samuel L Jackson is a frequent visitor. Just seven hours from London, Bermuda lies in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean, 950 miles north of the Caribbean and 650 miles off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. An unparalleled luxury destination, Bermuda offers everything from superb diving and world-class golf to designer spas, sophisticated hotels, delicious cuisine, great hospitality and miles of idyllic pink sand beaches. And with all this set amid beautiful colonial architecture, Bermuda boasts a unique period charm which never fails to enchant its visitors. Tickets will go on sale online on 2 March at www.bermudafilmfest.com, with individual film tickets costing $10. Visit www.bermudafilmfest.com for more information on the festival.
