Complimentary kid's marine biology activities amidst a 10-million year old rainforest and one of the best beaches in the world!
Known for its stunning natural setting, The Datai Langkawi has introduced complimentary activities that enable children (and occasionally adults too!) to learn all about the amazing marine life that surrounds the resort. Run by resident marine biologist Jonathan Chandrasakaran, Wonders of the Drifting World celebrates the often unsung heroes of the sea plankton, while Fishing for the Future teaches the next generation about the importance of sustainable fishing.
Wonders of the Drifting World
The microscopic organisms that fill the oceans are often forgotten, but they are vital to the survival of many organisms on earth, both in the sea and on land. Suitable for children aged six and above, this session sees Jonathan equip his team of mini me's with small plankton nets, before heading to the beautiful bay to collect some microscopic beings from the bay. Once everything has been successfully gathered, his team of intrepid trainee marine biologists examine their findings under a microscope and learn all about them. This complimentary session lasts for one hour and is available on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Fishing for the Future
With the amount of fish in the world's oceans continuing to dwindle, it's vital that the youth of today learn the importance of sustainable fishing. Suitable for children aged four and above, this fun introductory activity explores the mangrove stream on The Datai's beach, an important nursery for both freshwater and saltwater fish. Limited to a maximum of five children, this complimentary session runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Parents are welcome to accompany their children at both sessions and each is run subject to weather and tidal conditions.
