WHO: Miami Seaquarium staff and campers, along with Tuck and Sobe the protected loggerhead sea turtles.
WHAT: Camp Seaquarium children will put on their ocean conservation hats to release threatened loggerhead sea turtles Tuck and Sobe. Tuck was rescued from Pompano Beach on October of last year and was paralyzed for 4 months with lethargic loggerhead syndrome. The syndrome is thought to be caused by toxins in the ocean. Tuck was force fed by Miami Seaquarium animal care and veterinary staff for 4 months, and has now fully recovered. Sobe was rescued from Miami Beach in February with anemia caused by parasites. Both sea turtles are adult females, approximately 3 ft long. With the decrease of female nesting over the last ten years, the loggerhead sea turtle population is of growing concern, said Dr. Maya Rodriguez. It is highly rewarding to be able to assist this specie in need. Rodriguez said.
The turtles will be released into Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne.
In an effort to learn the importance of conservation, Camp Seaquarium children will assist in the release of the turtles and learn first hand from our experienced animal care and veterinary staff. It is our primary focus to teach our summer campers the importance of conservation, and what a better opportunity than assisting our in-house rehab team, said Sara Green, Miami Seaquarium Education Manager.
