Beaches, cultural attractions and resorts top the ultimate holiday wish list of Australian travellers, with Melbourne scoring the best domestic destination title and Paris taking out the best international holiday spot, according to a recent survey by Australia's favourite online destination, Wotif.com.

Wotif spokesperson, Kirsty La Bruniy said Melbourne took out the top spot for the best Australian destination, followed by Sydney and Tasmania.

“Melbourne beat domestic travel rival, Sydney, to claim the top destination in Australia. It's no surprise that Melbourne came out on top, its reputation as Australia's trendiest city continues to appeal to travellers. Its cutting edge art scene and award winning restaurants are a must visit for many Aussies,” Ms La Bruniy said.

“It's great to see Tasmania in the top three, with plenty of wineries, fine food and Hobart's Mona adding to the food and art scene, and attracting tourists from all over the country. The state's increasing popularity should continue to lure travellers with Aussies revealing their top holiday activity is visiting cultural destinations (28%), followed by food and wine (26%).

“With 58% of Aussies preferring a beach and coastal holiday, it's no surprise that the top five domestic holiday list was rounded out with iconic beach destinations - the Gold Coast and Cairns in fourth and fifth place.

“Aussies can't go past the beach as an ideal place to unwind and respondents revealed their favourite style of travel was a relaxing holiday (29%), followed by exploring a new culture (24%) and adventure or outdoor holiday (15%).”

 Ms La Bruniy said 90% of travellers had a favourite international holiday spot, with Paris voted as the ultimate destination.

“Paris is often the top of the list for a romantic holiday and is well known for its cuisine and attractions – it's clearly left an impression on many Australians.

“Whether it's the popularity of the Lord of the Rings series bringing New Zealand into the limelight, the great ski resorts or the convenient short-haul flight, it's a favourite with Australian travellers, beating both Italy and New York to second place.
