The Melbourne Cup, which this year is being held on November 1, is more than a horse race. Known locally as the celebration that stops a nation, it is Australias answer to Ascot, as much a social event as an equestrian one (complete with exotic hats and designer frocks). This year, for the first time, the Victoria Racing Club is offering a limited number of international visitors access to such exclusive enclosures as the Elms Marquee, where lunch and tea, as well as a reserved seat in the Lawn Stand, are included in the 245 ticket.
Also available are tickets to other events during the racing week, including breakfasts with the stars of the turf, black tie balls and VIP lunches. A pinnacle of the Australian social calendar is the Chairmans Dinner on October 26 where Pavarotti will be performing to those shelling out 540 for the privilege.
These hot tickets are available through a limited number of UK operators including Bridge & Wickers (020 7483 6555 www.bridgeandwickers.co.uk).
Sample package:
Fly to Melbourne for a 7-night stay on a room only basis at the elegant Sebel Suites on prestigious Collins Street from 1,778 per person including return flights, taxes, transfers, accommodation, tickets and lunch package at the Elms Marquee on Cup Day
