Stromboli is a small island off the north coast of Sicily dominated by an active volcano.  The distinctive cone shaped island is just 4km in diameter and has a few hundred residents living in small communities near the coast. An array of rocky coves and black sandy beaches set the scene for sea swimming and taking it easy.  Guided walks up the volcano start from the church of San Vincenzo and take about two and half hours to reach the top (956 m).  Alternatively a 40 minute walk up to a former Military Marine Observatory gives a fascinating view of the volcano while the terrace of the nearby pizzeria is the perfect spot to watch volcanic explosions.
