One of Brisbane's most unique redevelopments has taken shape over the last three months which will result in a brand new Mantra hotel to emerge from the former residential Observatory Tower.
Mantra on Edward will open its doors as a full serviced apartment hotel on 6 October, boasting some of the largest – a legacy of its previous residential status - and newest rooms in Brisbane once the conversion from residential to hotel is complete.
Mantra on Edward is the latest in a growing network of Brisbane hotels following the Australian based hotel group's focus on the Queensland capital. The Mantra Brisbane network has grown from two hotels to six in the last 12 months catering to both leisure travellers and corporate guests, with two more developments in the pipeline – including the acquisition of the Midtown Apartments next month and the commencement of a new development in November to open in 2016 in Fortitude Valley.
“It's not often that an opportunity like Mantra on Edward presents itself and the property will certainly round out a network of hotels that cater to a broad base of travellers,” said Mantra Group CEO, Bob East.
“We needed more product in the Brisbane CBD to complement our hotel at South Bank and with the four acquisitions we've made over the last six months Mantra now holds a very strong position as the 4-star favourite in the market.”
The 24 level Mantra on Edward, situated on the corner of Wickham Terrace and Edward Street, will offer 50 fully refurbished apartments when it opens with the remainder of the 114 apartments to be completed by March 2015. Business and holiday travellers can access rates from $189 per night in a One Bedroom Apartment, already available for sale at www.mantra.com.au
Substantially larger than standard apartment hotel rooms, with two bedroom apartments up to 124 square metres and three bedroom up to 165 square metres, each room offers all the comforts of home with 40” LCD TVs, iPod docking stations, Wifi internet access and large balconies to enjoy the city views.
General Manager, Jeremy Nordkamp, will oversee the completion of the conversion and operation of the new hotel, having previously held roles as Executive Assistant Manager at Mantra South Bank before a two year tenure as general manager of Peppers Beach Club in Port Douglas.
“It's always a great project for a hotel General Manager to undertake a hotel opening – but Mantra on Edward is a really unique proposition and the final product will be an exceptional offering combining the best of the residential and hotel elements.”
A large lap pool overlooking the streetscape below sits adjacent to a fully equipped gymnasium, spa and sauna. Eagle Street Pier's restaurants, bars and cafes are just a short stroll away and the city's sporting venues are within easy access.
Further growth is set to occur for the Australian operated hotel group, according to East: “We have just signed an agreement to manage another property from October and a new build property to open in 2016 will break ground later this year, and we are confident the G20 will provide a positive impact for Brisbane's profile.”
Mantra on Edward joins Mantra South Bank, Mantra on Queen, Mantra on the Quay, Mantra Terrace Hotel and BreakFree Fortitude Valley to create a six-strong Mantra Group hotel presence in Brisbane with rooms and conference space available throughout the G20 event period.
