With its glorious gardens, Mainau Island is a must-see destination in summer. Set on Lake Constance, with impressive views of lake and mountains, Mainau celebrates 2019 with a special theme dedicated to the Sun, Moon and Stars. Gardeners have created exhibits to show how the heavenly bodies influence both nature and mankind. Annual floral highlights include June, when roses peak, and early autumn, when dahlias are in their prime. But whenever you visit, there is always good food, freshly prepared using local produce. And Mainau is also affordable, especially for families with young children, who have their own special places.
Roses are red…
June is Rose Month, one of the highlights on the Mainau floral calendar. Visitors flock to see more than 1,000 varieties in bloom along the Wild and Bush Rose Promenade, as well as in the Italian Rose Garden. Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden had this landscaped in 1861 in the style of an Italian flower garden. In June, when perfume fills the warm summer air, visitors can also vote for their favourite rose, to decide Mainau’s “Queen of Roses”.
Queen of the Dahlias
One of Mainau’s best-loved traditions is the annual Dahlia Show. As summer ends, the dahlias bloom, turning the south-facing beds into a blazing tapestry of colour. From late August to mid-October, think 12,000 plants and 250 varieties, anything from two feet to six feet tall! And, while they are admiring and photographing these glorious flowers, visitors can vote for their Mainau “Queen of Dahlias”: peony or anemone dahlias? Starfish or pom-pom? You choose! Previous winners include Tartan, Gladiator and Kazusa-shiranami.
Kids just wanna have fun
In summer, families love Mainau, because there is so much designed just for children. Parents can relax as their youngsters run around Children’s Land, with Water World (there are clothes dryers!), Blumi’s Lakeside World and a miniature village. After visiting the farmyard with its petting zoo and pony rides, kids can pick up a free Treasure Hunt map; find the hidden treasure and win a prize! Best of all, entry is free for children up to the age of 12.
Food, glorious food
Eating is one of the pleasures of a visit to Mainau. Choose from 10 restaurants, from formal to self-service, from the Schwedenschenke, like a Swedish country inn, to the Würstle grill, with grilled sausages and salads. Very popular is the island’s own bakery, with its wood-fired oven, where you can see bakers making and baking Dinnele (local-style quiche), bread for sandwiches and apple-almond cake. Relax in the beer garden; order Mainau apple juice and ice creams at the cafés.
