The stunning Grange au Lac, an awe-inspiring wooden auditorium at Evian Resort on Lake Geneva, France, will be filled with music for three days between 17th-19th May, as this year's Musical Interludes festival, takes place there. The festival celebrates the auditorium's 20th anniversary and will be attended by the architect that built it, Patrick Bouchain.
Grange au Lac, is located in the beautiful woodlands in the grounds of Evian Resort's Royal Hotel and Ermitage Hotel. It's a natural setting, a simple place of contemplation where music comes into its own. The auditorium was built from pine and red cedar in 1983 at the request of Antoine Riboud, former CEO of BSN, in honour of his friend, the famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.
Laurence Dale, Director of the Musical Interludes, a role he has played since the festival began, has a programme of exceptional moments in store:
- The opening evening is dedicated to anniversaries: lyrical with soprano Annemarie Kremer and the bi centenary of Verdi and Wagner; youthful with the centenary of Benjamin Britten and his educational work " The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" written to introduce young people to the instruments in an orchestra. And creative with a composition by the young Joseph Phibbs in honour of Rostropovich, who was behind the creation of the event.
- A jazz concert on the Friday evening with the famous composer and pianist Claude Bolling, who will perform a selection of well-known international tunes with his friends.
- Maxim Beitan, accompanied by the Evian Festival Orchestra, will bring the festival to a close with the concerto for cello by Robert Schumann, and the Musical Interludes will conclude with an emotional journey to the tune of Symphony No. 4 by Brahms.
- Not forgetting an exciting get-together on Friday 17 May at 2.30 p.m. at the Grange au Lac with the young British composer Joseph Phibbs and the Evian Festival Orchestra, which will perform the "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra", an educational work by Britten created for young people. On Saturday 18 May at 5 p.m., the auditorium at the Palais Lumière will screen the film "Rostropovich, The Genius of the Cello" by John Bridcutt, in the presence of the producer and the cellist Maxim Beitan.
