All About The Story

Specialist Scandinavian and Nordic tour operator Magnetic North Travel highlights the best in hotel architecture from their programme of tailor-made holidays in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland and Canada ahead of World Architecture Day on Monday (2nd October 2017).

For holidaymakers who have a keen interest in architecture and for those who are mindful of the ecological footprint of their holiday, The Magnetic North Travel team, experts in the Arctic and Nordic destinations, recommend the following three incredibly unique hotels from their carefully chosen programme of accommodation and experiences:

Manshausen Island Sea Cabins - Norway

Manshausen Island Resort in Norway was designed by award-winning architect Snorre Stinessen who has won several prizes for the resort at the Architizer A+Awards in New York, often referred to as 'The Oscars of Architecture'. The resort, situated in the Steigen Archipelago off the coast of Northern Norway, is made up of just four modular construction sea cabins that jut out from the island with three walls clad in larch and floor-to-ceiling glass wrapped around their fronts.

Each sea cabin has two separate bedrooms and a bathroom designed to offer a comfortable contemporary living space, while simultaneously allowing guests to experience the region's dramatic external elements. Stinessen wants guests to get as close as possible to all that is Arctic on the outside without compromising on comforts on the inside. After dark, the sea cabins offer unparalleled views of the Aurora.

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel - Finland

Designed by Helsinki-based Studio Puisto, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel opened its doors in May this year. The inspiration for the accommodation concept — set on a steep natural slope — came from Nordic nature and culture. 32 Arctic TreeHouse Suites & 5 Arctic Glass Houses are located in the forest — the architect's objective was to create the perfect setting to experience nature and arctic mysticism. Elevated above the forest floor by black stilts, the idea for each unit was to create a warm nest. A safe place within the forest where guests can engage with the surrounding Arctic environment.

The ecological footprint of the materials and processes used to build each unit played an important part in the design of the hotel. The units were built offsite and lifted onto the pillars, reducing the impact on the fragile arctic nature and keeping destruction to a minimum. Only the connecting of the infrastructure network and the installation of the large windows that frame the bedrooms were done on site.

The hotel is located in Finnish Lapland's Arctic Circle next to Rovaniemi's SantaPark Arctic World, a Christmas themed family adventure park with the opportunity to meet Santa.

Fogo Island Inn - Newfoundland, Canada

Described as 'architecture's new rock star', Canadian-born Todd Saunders of Saunders Architecture in Norway is the architectural genius behind Fogo Island Inn located on Fogo Island off the coast of the Atlantic Canadian Province of Newfoundland. His client, Zita Cobb, a native of Fogo Island and president of the Shorefast Foundation, invested her dot-com millions to reposition her remote community into a cultural, architecturally enlightened destination with The Inn taking centre stage.

The X-shaped structure was designed to ensure minimal impact on the island's natural environment, using modern methods. Ecological and self-sustaining systems have been subtly integrated and include the latest technologies to reduce and conserve energy and water usage.

Saunders designed The Inn to also reflect the many Newfoundland fishing stages across the province - huts made from wood that sit on stilts over the ocean used to dry cod from the Atlantic. It boasts an art gallery, cinema and roof deck hot tubs, and all 29 guest rooms face the ocean.

Book Northern a Short Break at Fogo Island Inn with Magnetic North Travel. This 4 night package starts at £1250 per person based on two sharing. Does not include flights.
