MACAO TO WELCOME GLOBAL MUSIC TALENT

FOR 30th INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Macao is getting ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to the pearl jubilee of the Macao International Music Festival, taking place from the 1st to 30th October 2016. Internationally renowned musicians – from the Berlin Philharmonic String Quintet to the world famous Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the China Philharmonic Orchestra - will perform a diverse programme including classical, opera, jazz, fado and even film scores. Several of Macao's World Heritage sites – including the Dom Pedro V Theatre and St. Dominic's Church – will serve as inspiring settings for some of the performances

This year's festival, which has long been one of the highlights of Macao's cultural calendar, is themed around 'Glorious 30 – The Sinophone Rhapsodies'. Attracting visitors from around the globe, it will feature performers from the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Russia, France, Portugal, Mongolia, Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, making it a truly international event.

Classical highlights will include, Puccini's masterpiece Turandot; the world famous Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra performing works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich; and performances from the Macao Chinese Orchestra, Guangdong National Orchestra, Taipei Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Yao Yuen Chinese Music Association.

Other musical genres featured will include haunting fado performances at Mount Fortress from Portugal's new rising star Carminho and contemporary jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove playing several works by jazz giant Miles Davis.  The Dr. Carlos d'Assumpção park will see the open air screening of two of Charlie Chaplin's classic films - “City Lights” and “The Gold Rush” – while the score is played live by the Macao Orchestra.  The UK will be represented by the Colin Currie Group, making its Asian debut with a minimalist concert featuring percussion works by iconic composer Steve Reich.

In addition to the musical performances, there will be back stage tours, standalone and pre-show talks, master classes, meet and greets and community screenings. The festival will also incorporate the 'Macao International Music Festival Forum' where the 30th Macao International Music Festival Special Commemorative Edition will be launched, which will look back at the history and development of the festival and its impact on the cultural landscape in Macao.
