Luxury is subjective and means different things to different people so large accommodation rental specialists' thebigdomain.com recently polled 2,000 people around the UK to find the most sought after features of a luxury villa holiday. With dishwashers proving more popular than gyms, it seems as though we are actually quite easy to please. 

Location is without doubt the most important factor when booking a luxury holiday, with sea views and countryside views both featuring in the top three of the most wanted facilities. In fact, sea views appeared within a whopping 86 per cent of people's top five most wanted characteristics and countryside views appeared in 70 per cent of people's top five most wanted features. Along the same theme, nightlife snuck into 44 per cent of people's ideal top five.

In terms of amenities and most popular facilities, private pools appeared in 77 per cent of people's top five features and internet access appeared in 59 per cent of people's top five most sought after facilities. It could therefore be implied that we are searching for ultimate relaxation and then wish to make our friends jealous by posting holiday status updates, snaps, and selfies!

Reinforcing the want for relaxation, on-site gyms were ranked as the second least required for a luxury holiday, with pet friendly accommodation featuring at the bottom of the overall list. Furthermore, 24 per cent of those surveyed ranked a dishwasher as one of the top five most important features for a luxury holiday compared to just 12 per cent who ranked an on-site gym within the top five most wanted features.

For those thinking that there would be a gender split, you will be disappointed as men and women agreed upon an almost identical list of the top luxury holiday features with the only discrepancy being that women rank catering in the top five whereas men would prefer a lively nightlife. It goes without saying that location is important too with coastal views being favoured but ultimately luxury seems to be synonymous with ease and relaxation which is evidenced by the fact that on-site gyms and pet friendliness appeared at the bottom of the list and catering appears higher.”
