London's most fashionable afternoon tea has seen designer cakes come and go - from Giles Deacon to Sonia Rykiel to Marc Jacobs - and to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Prt--Portea, The Berkeley has surveyed fashion aficionados to vote for the most memorable creations from the past 5 years. Suitably named the 'Greatest Hits' collection, the votes represent the result of more then 1,700 fashionistas who selected their number one fashion pastry. The sparkly high-heeled Louboutin shoe biscuit came in first place, closely followed by the Alice Temperley apple and panacotta mousse. Philip Treacy's show-stopping chocolate butterfly hat cake came in third. The interactive survey attracted hundreds of cake lovers who selected their favourite edible designs at www.the-berkeley.co.uk/votepret.
Commenting on his win, Christian Louboutin said: 'The surprise of my shoe-biscuit becoming a 'winner' is, for me, the cherry on the cake!' Top 3 survey results: 1. Christian Louboutin sparkly high-heeled ginger shoe biscuit with signature red sole - S/S 2008 2. Alice Temperley apple and pannacotta mousse with high heel tuille, topped with golden blueberries - S/S 2005 3. Philip Treacy chocolate hat cake with Monarch butterfly A/W 2009
With more than 24% of the votes, Louboutin proved to be a clear winner with his signature red-soled heels, beating fashion legends such as Paul Smith, Zac Posen and rival Jimmy Choo.
Many designers have been spotted in The Berkeley's Caramel Room eating their own designs, from Philip Treacy to Alice Temperley to Anya Hindmarch. Created in 2005 to attract the fashionable shoppers from Sloane Street, Harrods and Harvey Nichols, Prt--Portea has created a cult following over the years with many afternoon tea lovers returning every season to check out the latest collection of bright-coloured meringues, colour blocking mousses and biscuits with sparkly icing. Prt-a-Portea travelled the world from Dublin to Tokyo and visited New York Fashion Week in February 2009 as The Berkeley partnered with Bergdorf Goodman to offer its shoppers a chance to munch on their recently purchased Michael Kors polka dot dress.
Commenting on the 'Greatest Hits' collection, Head Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat said: "We knew we had to do something special to celebrate 5 years of Prt--Portea and loved the idea of involving the people who have been following our afternoon tea from the start. It is overwhelming to see so many people respond via Facebook, Twitter and our own website. Congratulations to Christian!"
Prt--Portea is served on a bespoke collection of Paul Smith fine bone china and for the icing on the cake, chilled champagne is served in Baccarat crystal flutes. Prt--Portea gift cards and notelets are also available to buy to give someone special an original present.
