The surrounding waters off Lizard Island hold around 400 kinds of coral and more than 1500 species of fish. Diving and snorkelling are year-round activities on this Great Barrier Reef island and with coral gardens starting only a few metres off the beach both the beginner and the enthusiast can be assured of spectacular underwater experiences whilst staying at Lizard Island.
Surrounded by fringing coral reefs, inner shelf, outer barrier or ribbon reefs and lagoon reefs, Lizard Island offers a number of outstanding sites, each with spectacular coral gardens and many underwater attractions. Guests can take snorkelling lessons and enjoy guided snorkelling activities as well as dive the reef with dives ranging from six to 20 metres in depth.
North Point, Cabia Hole and The Caves are among the sites that are rated must do at Lizard Island. The outer reef, including the famous Cod Hole, is another of Lizard Islands key attractions. For snorkellers and divers alike, the antics of the giant but friendly cod are a highlight, whilst the variety of tropical fish and corals is outstanding. The clam garden, where giant clams that weigh around 260kg grow, is another extraordinary site.
Lizard Island guests can board the MV Monitor a custom built dive and coral viewing boat or the MV Serranidae for full day Outer Reef or half day Inner Reef trips where snorkelling, diving and visiting small coral islands are possible.
Full dive facilities are available on the island including hire of equipment and Open Water dive certification courses are also available.
