Lights Out at the Langham, Xintiandi to Support Earth Hour With Initiatives to Go Beyond the Hour

(Shanghai, 27 March, 2014) On 29 March, 2014, The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai will turn off its lights to support the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) Earth Hour, an international event and ecological initiative held on the last Saturday of March every year that asks households and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour between 8:30pm and 9:30pm to raise awareness about climate change and the future of our planet.

This is the third consecutive time since its opening that The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai will participate in this worthy cause that will continue to be an annual event on the hotel's calendar.

The Langham staff will be undertaking a number of energy saving initiatives during this time. Believing that every individual has our role to play in conserving our planet, our 'Green Team' will be making a personal pledge to contribute to initiatives at work and at home, not only on Earth Hour day but beyond the hour to keep with good daily habits. For example, reducing the use of non essential lights in the office and at home, riding the bicycle or taking the bus once a week for those who drive, and segmenting rubbish for proper recycling in their homes.

Throughout the day, The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai will undertake energy saving measures such as reducing the number of chemicals, hot water and electricity that the hotel uses to power up its operations. During the hour, all building exterior and non-essential lighting will be switched off and interior lighting will be dimmed. The magnificent grand chandelier in the hotel's atrium will also mark the Earth Hour by going completely dark during the period.

In the hotel's restaurants and bars, guests will dine by candle light and low carbon food menus will be available on the international spread in Cachet restaurant. To add to the serene atmosphere in Cachet and the Lobby Lounge, live classical music by a pianist will entertain guests between 7:30pm and 9:30pm.

For guests staying in The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai, they are encouraged join the hotel for the Earth Hour by turning off their non-essential room lights, air-conditioning and television during the hour. Club floor guests are invited to enjoy complimentary Champagne, cocktails and light dinner in the Langham Club Lounge and witness a synchronized lights out in the city, and in-house guests are invited to a complimentary first drink when they dine or drink at the hotel outlets.
