In 2003, LEGOLAND California stunned the world with an incredible 30 foot tall Christmas tree made completely of LEGO bricksNow, in 2004, the 128-acre theme park in Carlsbad will honor our nations presidents by building the tallest LEGO tower ever constructed! Thousands of children and adults of all ages will click a half of a million standard LEGO bricks together over Presidents Day Weekend to break the world record for the tallest LEGO tower.
The building begins Thursday, Feb. 12 and culminates with the last brick being placed 90 feet above ground on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 16 at 10:30 a.m. The final bricks will be clicked together at a special topping off ceremony featuring the parks three new Master Model Builders. Nathan Sawaya of New York, NY, Aaron Sneary of Laurel, MD, and Kristi Klein of Los Angeles, CA, were chosen from more than 500 applicants nationwide to be a part of the elite Master Model Building team at the park. The three will begin their career at the park by being hoisted 90 feet in the air in order to measure this masterpiece.
A successful attempt will shatter the existing record of 89.3 feet set last year at LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark. That structure took four days, 32 hours, nearly 50-thousand guests and 500,000 LEGO bricks to complete. When finished, this will be the tallest LEGO structure in the world, said John Jakobsen, president and general manager of LEGOLAND California. What an amazing feat for our guests to be able to partake in.
The tower will soar over the family theme parks main entrance and will be entirely built of LEGO bricks. Construction begins every day during the holiday weekend at 10 a.m. when LEGOLAND opens and will stop when the park closes at 5 p.m.
