Leaf Peeping With Amtrak

Amtrak

Golden shades of orange and red, glimpses of green interlaced with forests and waterfalls: a full palette of colour awaits you from your own spectator window.

Experience Americas fall foliage by train by taking Amtraks aptly-named Maple Leaf route which links New York City with Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Toronto.

This 500 mile journey takes in the Hudson River Valley, where maple trees flourish on steep riverbanks in a lush landscape. At Schenectady, the rocky cliff hangs over the tracks and is the site where the Mohawks fought and defeated the Mohicans at Kinquariones. The train then crosses the Mohawk River to journey along the Erie Canal. Colourful harness horse racing takes place between April and October at Vernon Downs Racetrack at Utica, one of the worlds fastest tracks and it is here where Uticas Union Station stands as the monument to the golden age of railroading. The Maple Leaf crosses the Niagara River on a high bridge with the Falls to left side and travels towards Lake Ontario among small farms and vineyards to reach the final destination by mid evening.

Amtraks Maple Leaf route runs daily between the two destinations. The northbound service leaves New York City early in the morning to reach Albany by midmorning, Buffalo by mid afternoon, Niagara Falls late afternoon and Toronto by mid evening. Travelling south, trains leave Toronto early in the morning to reach Niagara Falls by midday, Buffalo early afternoon, Albany early evening and New York by mid evening.

Amtraks Maple Leaf takes around 12 hours, 30 minutes and reservations are required. Comfortable coach seating provides wide reclining seats with fold-down tray tables and overhead reading lights. The Lounge/Caf Car on board offers sandwiches, snacks and beverages for purchase.
