Lax Welcomes Australian and New Zealand Travellers

Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board

LAX is currently undergoing a significant transformation, investing USD$14 billion into a modernisation program to streamline the consumer experience. The introduction of new seamless immigration processes, upgraded technology and the hottest local dining and shopping options are helping to cement LAX's reputation as a world-class airport and the undisputed gateway to North America.

Travellers are spoilt for choice with five direct services from Australia (Qantas, Virgin Australia, United Airlines, Delta Airlines and American Airlines) and two from New Zealand (Air NZ and American Airlines). The increased competition has not only boosted capacity but has also made fares more attractive.

Here are the top reasons LAX is the airport of choice for business and leisure travellers.

1) LAX GETS TECH SAVVY

  • With USD$1.9 billion in completed redevelopments, the state-of-the-art Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) can now process 4,500 passengers per hour through immigration, an increase from a rate of 2,800 per hour in 2011.
  • The introduction of Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks, expedite the entry process for international travellers arriving through TBIT, allowing travellers to submit their customs declaration form and biographical information electronically, reducing processing time to around 90 seconds per individual.
  • A new In-Line Baggage Handling & Screening System program has automated the security screening of checked baggage at all LAX terminals, making travel through LAX safer, faster and more convenient. The more timely and efficient baggage security screening is also reducing passenger congestion in the airline ticketing lobbies by relocating the checked baggage screening machines to non-public areas.

2) SPOTLIGHT ON TOM BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL (TBIT)

With Qantas, Virgin Australia and Air NZ flying in and out of TBIT, Australian and New Zealand passengers can be kept busy with the wealth of new premier dining, retail shopping, luxurious airline club lounges and entertainment options now available.

  • A. inspired retail:
    • A partnership with Westfield has seen the TBIT retail area triple in size.
    • The terminal offers a mix of 32 shops from luxury designer brands to outlets that are distinctly L.A. inspired, such as Fred Segal.
  • A inspired dining:
    • Westfield has bypassed traditional fast food outlets and opted for a distinctly Southern California vibe. Highlights include Umami Burger, ink.sack, and 800 Degrees Pizza.
  • LAX gets all 'arty':
    • LAX has transformed many of its public areas into art spaces featuring contemporary art exhibitions and installations.
    • Key installations to watch out for include:
      • 'Air Garden' by Ball-Nogues Studio: a large-scale sculptural installation that looks much like a delicate beaded curtain.
      • 'Bell Tower' by Mark Bradford: suspended from a skylight above the TSA security screening area.
    • Pets Unstressing Passengers (PUPs) programme:
    • First launched in 2013, the Pets Unstressing Passengers (PUPs) programme aims to soothe passengers of all ages thanks to an initiative, which boasts more than 40 canine 'volunteers'. The pups of all shapes and sizes roam through the international departure gates surprising and delighting passengers.
      • All PUP volunteers and dogs are required to be registered with Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
    • TBIT also features six luxurious airline club lounges and a giant integrated media system. Lounges available include: Qantas Lounge, oneworld Alliance Lounge, Star Alliance Lounge, L.A. International Lounge, Emirates First and Business Class Lounge and the Korean Air Lounge.
