Rio Carnival:

The highlight of Rio Carnival is the all night Carnival Parades, in which the 12 best samba schools, with their dazzling costumes and floats, parade through the Sambadrome. Some schools have thousands of members and as many as 30 floats each. Judges grade the contestants along the route, marking them on various attributes from dancing and costume to discipline and enthusiasm. The procession is so amazingly lavish and on such a grand scale it'll make other carnivals you've been to seem relatively tame.

Copacabana Palace:

This grand institution, Hotel Copacabana Palace, in one of the oldest buildings on Copacabana's beachfront strip, is Rio's most famous hotel, oozing with refinement and traditional luxury. It is now owned and operated by the prestigious Orient Express group. A fine neo-classical façade sets the tone for this sumptuous property, elegant and stylish throughout. Assuredly first class in its facilities and attitude to its guests, the hotel offers an old-fashioned, reassuring level of service.

"You arrive to the genuine full red carpet treatment, locals wait for hours for a glimpse of soap stars and celebs joining the party. It's very exclusive, definitely the place to be for the local glitterati, but you'll almost certainly spot international stars (I was rubbing shoulders with Vincent Cassel at the caipirinha bar)." Sarah Bradley, Managing Director.
