The highlight of Rio Carnival is the all night Carnival Parades, in which the 12 best samba schools, with their dazzling costumes and floats, parade through the Sambadrome. Some schools have thousands of members and as many as 30 floats each. Judges grade the contestants along the route, marking them on various attributes from dancing and costume to discipline and enthusiasm. The procession is so amazingly lavish and on such a grand scale it'll make other carnivals you've been to seem relatively tame.
This grand institution, Hotel Copacabana Palace, in one of the oldest buildings on Copacabana's beachfront strip, is Rio's most famous hotel, oozing with refinement and traditional luxury.
