Langdale Chase

THE LAKE DISTRICT. THE HOTEL.

July 2023…// Located in the heart of the Lake District, on the banks of Lake Windemere, Langdale Chase is set for a grand reopening in Autumn 2023. Carefully restored, conceptually reimagined, and transformed into a contemporary hotel like no other in the Lake District, Langdale Chase will be refreshingly different, rediscovering the quality of its origins whilst offering impeccable service. The hotel will accommodate 30 immaculately designed bedrooms that provide a timeless look and feel, intertwining with the colours of the surrounding water and mountains, as well as a series of flowing lounges leading out onto the garden terraces, a new cocktail bar, and real fires to settle in beside.

Owned by Daniel Thwaites, the family-owned hospitality business is renovating the Grade II listed building and its gardens into a relaxing sanctuary. Keeping in line with its rich history dating back to when the hotel first opened in 1937, the refurbishments are the most extensive to date and have been inspired by the 1920s and 1930s, a time known as the ‘golden era’ of the Lake District. Designs and interiors from Jane Goff (Director at Goff Associates Ltd) elevate the property through modern materials, crafting a contemporary space that blends seamlessly into the Victorian villa’s lakeside surroundings, bringing the outside in with natural tones and a calming design vision. Conceptually designed sympathetically to its lakeside setting, Jane Goff has subtly referenced this throughout – from the accents of elegant patterns through to clever placement of textured wallpaper and soft furnishings that create warmth and distinct personality in every room.

The rooms are spacious, have individual designs, and offer a discreet hideaway for hotel guests – with 21 bedrooms in the main house, eight bedrooms in the Lakehouse and a private Boathouse suite to choose from. All rooms provide minibars, air-conditioning and marble bathrooms – stocked with products by Cumbrian-based fragrance and natural skincare brand, Bath House. The majority of rooms offer baths positioned to take best advantage of the lake views, with some ground floor dog-friendly options available too. The impeccable suites boast unrivalled views across Windermere and the nearby fells, with private reading corners. The Boathouse, located at the far end of the gardens and sitting on top of the water, is wildly romantic, secluded and provides the finest waterside location with its private rooftop terrace and beach, as well as panoramic views across the lake.

Accompanying the rooms will be a two AA Rosette-awarded restaurant, housed in the main building with floor to ceiling glass windows looking out across the gardens and Windermere. Led by Executive Chef Michael Cole, it will offer a menu centred around classic British cuisine, inspired by the Lake District and the surrounding coastline. A cosy bar located at the front of the hotel will provide guests with a stylish spot to enjoy a post hike recovery or an evening nightcap and flowing lounges allow guests to relax, read, and take in the views of the iconic Langdale Pikes and Coniston Fells. The garden terraces provide the perfect outdoor setting for guests to marvel at the surrounding lake and fells during warmer months, while the cinema is perfect for cosy movie sittings, alongside a newly developed wine tasting room.

Speaking of the project, Richard Bailey, Executive Chairman of Daniel Thwaites, said: “Langdale Chase is a magical place. It’s a privilege to be part of the team that will wow guests with its new look and feel. I have absolute confidence that reinventing it will take people by storm, that we are creating something truly special. With contemporary British design matched to an impressive new gourmet menu in our award-winning restaurant, we want to build a new generation of loyal supporters for the hotel who feel intrinsically as much a part of the Langdale Chase family as we do.”

Langdale Chase is regarded as the best lakeside address in the Lake District National Park. Built in 1890 as a lavish private residence, Langdale Chase first opened its doors as a hotel in 1937 and houses many special architectural features, including the original boathouse. The hotel is set on 6.4-acres of historic gardens designed by Thomas Mawson, the landscape architect behind the Hague’s Peace Palace Gardens.
