Lamb Buggy Tours at Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace is expecting a record number of lambs this year! With over 3,000 lambs due arrive in total and 2800 already gambolling in the 'Capability' Brown Parkland there is no better time to take a Lamb Buggy Tour.

Find the spring arrivals from now until 3 June. Visitors can learn about Blenheim Palace's rich history and discover more about the Estate farm on a new buggy tour through the Park to the lambing fields set in the historic surrounds of the Grand Avenue.

The Park is home to approximately 1550 ewes, which each year give birth to an average of 2800 lambs. The grassland within this World Heritage Site is an idyllic area for our extensive flock to graze throughout the year. We lamb outdoors in to give lambs the best spring grass and nutrients they need.

Blenheim Palace lambs later than many farms because their sheep are reared entirely on grass largely staying within the Park walls, keeping them as naturally healthy and organic as possible.

The breeds at Blenheim Palace are Scotch Mule, Charollais, Romney and Poll Dorset and according to Head Shepherd Charles Gerring, “Make the best lawnmowers”.

The record number is down to a combination of things that the Shepherds and Estate team have done which led to the ewes being in great shape when it came to tupping last November.

“We've planted new herbal grass leys which have a mix of Chicory, Sainfoin (which is a traditional 'super grass' that lost favour to more vigorous rye grasses) and lots of other things the sheep like – this meant we could take the lambs off their mums earlier to give them a break. Also the weather was quite mild this winter, particularly at tupping - this meant we've had plenty of grass throughout the year.” Says Roy Cox, Estate Manager.

“Add to this keeping an eye on worm numbers in the grass, better monitoring with electronic tag identification and we have happy ewes, hopefully giving us lots of lambs.”

Visitors are asked to please refrain from approaching or touching the sheep and lambs whilst on this tour.
