NEW YORK, NYJuly 08, 2015 – Kyoto, Japan has been named The World's Best City in Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards 2015. This is the second year Kyoto has ranked number one in the World's Best Awards, moving up from number five in the World's Best Awards 2013.

Kyoto is located in the Kansai region of Japan.  It is in the center of Honshu and is the second largest economic hub, after Tokyo. Kyoto offers all the benefits of a modern city with an ancient history.  The city's historic temples and shrines, traditional art and crafts industries, and an abundance of nature make it The World's Best City.

The allure of Kyoto can be attributed to its unique place in Japan's cultural and historical landscape. Known as the cultural heart of Japan, Kyoto is famed for ancient temples and the grounds of the Imperial Palace. Its world class dining scene and high concentration of technology companies such as Nintendo, Kyocera, and Omron all contribute to the modernity and popularity of this cultural city.

Originally the capital of Japan, Kyoto has a vast history and traditional culture. Kyoto is dotted with over 2,000 shrines and temples, which contain about 20% of Japan's National Treasures and about 14% of its Important Cultural Assets; 17 places in Kyoto are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Throughout the year, Kyoto is host to many world-renown festivals such as the Gion and Jidai Matsuri Festivals.
