Kuramathi Maldives Celebrate World Oceans Day 2018

Niva Dhigali Maldives

Kuramathi are thrilled to join the fight against the plastic tide for World Oceans Day on June 8 2018. The eco-friendly resort have organised an extensive program of activities for its guests to encourage awareness of the environment including a clean-up dive and educative activities for children.

Inviting all guests and resort staff the team will take a giant stride into the lagoon with one mission; to collect as much debris as possible. The clean-up dive will include collection of garbage in all forms including metal, rope, plastic and all other non-biodegradable waste. All rubbish will be recycled by the resort to help preserve the atolls reefs and the world's oceans.

The resort's Marine Biologist and Eco Centre will also be hosting several seminars and events, including their annual underwater photography competition, to further highlight the plight against plastic pollution. For children, a short film will be screened to educate on Kuramathi's marine life and the responsibility we have with our human footprint.

Kuramathi has an extensive sustainability programme. Their Eco Centre was established in 1999 - inspired after the El Nińo bleaching on the corals, it is led by professionals including their resident Marine Biologist and Horticulturist. Operating all year long, it plays a vital role in providing guests and local communities with an enriched experience of the Maldives, ensuring they are fully educated on ocean and island practises. The centre's team also works with other Maldivian bodies to carry out coral reef research, monitor sea water temperature and maintain a coral nursery. New initiatives include the reduction of plastic waste with the introduction of glass bottles for drinks, paper straws and the hydroponics garden.

Set in the heart of Kuramathi, the Hydroponics Garden is a remarkable facility which caters 70% of fresh salads to the islands 13 food outlets. The gardens which feature 20 greenhouses grow produce including herbs such as coriander, mint, green basil, dill sage and lemongrass. Running alongside the garden is the Natural Trail, set on an untouched area of tropical Maldivian forest.

Note to Editors:

Kuramathi is one of the first resorts to open in the Maldives and is part of Universal Resorts of Universal Enterprises Private Ltd, a 100% Maldivian owned company, and the pioneers of tourism in the Maldives.

Situated in the diminutive Maldivian archipelago of Rasdhoo Atoll, this paradise island is a mere 1.8 km in length and is trailed by a snaking kilometre of white sandbank, lending a dramatic quality to the idyllic surroundings.  A sense of tranquil isolation is created by an environment of lush and verdant vegetation fringed by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean.
