Love a great Australian story? Come to this year's Kimberley Writers Festival in Kununurra and be inspired, entertained and moved by a great depth of storytelling talent from 8 to 10 September 2017.
This year's visiting talent includes:
- Australian bestselling author and voice of the outback Fleur McDonald.
- Multi award winning Indigenous performer, filmmaker and writer Karla Hart
- Victorian poet and novelist Lia Hills, author of this year's release The Crying Place
- Melbourne author, comedian and political satirist Ben Pobjie
- Danielle Lim, winner of the Singapore Literary Prize for non-fiction in 2016 for her book The Sound of SCH - A Mental Breakdown, a Life Journey
- Lucas Proudfoot – writer and one of Australia's most versatile children's performers
- Comedian Ben Darsow - Nominated for Best Comedy 2017 & 2016 Perth Fringe World
- Children's writer Sabrina Dudgeon
Event highlights include the Friday Literary Lunch at Kununurra Country Club featuring Fleur McDonald, Ben Darsow and Lia Hills. This will be followed by the opening night cocktail party at the Kununurra School and Community Library (tickets to both are essential via Eventbrite).
The Main Event takes place all day Saturday back at the library with a chock-a-block program of storytelling, a comedy slam with the two Bens, and discussions around life in the Australian country. It's free to attend and bookings are not required.
A special event will take place on Saturday night with Tura New Music performing a live concert under the stars at the Kununurra Picture Gardens featuring Mark Atkins, Stephen Pigram, Bart Willoughby and The Narli Ensemble. Tickets available from Kununurra Visitor Centre.
On Sunday the ever-popular Triple J Tours and Ord Valley Roadhouse Champagne Brunch returns. Cruise the tranquil Ord River and enjoy readings from our special guests while being surrounded by Kimberley nature. Don't miss out on getting a ticket from Eventbrite as it usually sells out.
The Festival concludes with 'Sharing our stories', giving people the opportunity to listen to Kununurra elders telling their stories at Celebrity Tree Park Gazebo at 11.45am, followed by the official closing at the same location, where our special guests will be farewelled in true Kununurra style. Both are free events.
During Book Week (4-8 September) in the week before the Festival, Lucas Proudfoot will be touring remote community schools in and around Kununurra, Kalumburu, Wyndham, Warnum and Doon Doon, performing a live music show and interactive storytelling. The kids are in for a treat!
This year's Festival will also mark Indigenous Literacy Day on 6 September with a Great Book Swap. Bring a book to the Library in the lead up to the Festival and take home a different book for a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go to the Indigenous Literary Foundation.
