The Kansas Underground Salt Museum marked their first sell out day since they began offering Preview Tours to the public on May 1, 2007.

�It was a great feeling to have the elevator at full capacity on every tour. We took 532 people into the mine today,� said Linda Schmitt, executive director. �Advance sales are strong going into the summer and we encourage everyone to book their tickets in advance so they�re guaranteed a space on the elevator.�

Since May, the Salt Museum has welcomed visitors from Australia, Canada, France, and Sweden, as well as Georgia, California, New Mexico, Connecticut, and many other states, including all the states surrounding Kansas.

�It�s been a delight to meet so many people from around the world who have eagerly awaited the opportunity to come underground to our museum,� said Schmitt. �While work is still underway, we�re thrilled that we can offer the opportunity to go 650 feet below Hutchinson to experience the awe of the salt caverns formed 280 million years ago.�

Entry to the museum involves a trip in a double-decked elevator that accommodates up to 30 people. Once underground, visitors can walk through the various museum exhibits at their leisure, take a tram tour of The Dark Ride, and spend time in the Salt Cellar Gift Shop.

The mine maintains a 68-degree temperature and 40% relative humidity year-round making it a very pleasant environment. Because some walking is involved, visitors should wear comfortable shoes. Preview Tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. The final tour going underground each day is at 3:30 p.m. The museum is not open on Mondays.
