Flint Hills Discovery Center

 

The Flint Hills Discovery Center is a dynamic tribute to the Tallgrass Prairie and the
Flint Hills. The striking beauty of the Flint Hills has a rich history waiting to be discovered. Visitors will explore how settlers and pioneers encountered shallow soils, forcing them to create new uses for a new land. Cherokee Nation National Prison

 

The Cherokee Nation Prison was the only penitentiary building in the entire Indian Territory from 1875 to 1901.  It housed sentenced or accused prisoners from
throughout the territory.  It was built in 1875 and was created for the purpose of reformation as well as for punishment for offenders.  On May 1, 2012 the prison will open as a museum and interpretive center in Tahlequah. http://www.cherokeetourismok.com/Attractions/Pages/CherokeeNationalJail.aspx

Joyful Noise

 

People of all ages and musical abilities are invited to play together in the midst of the Tallgrass prairie. Spontaneity, music, family and love of nature come together
for a whole day in the Flint Hills. Whether you play a cello or kazoo you will
feel welcome. The day will feature sessions ranging from introductory to
advanced in string, percussion, brass, woodwinds and voice. Instruments loaned
for the day by Flint Hills Music of Emporia. A full day of prairie activities for both adults and children include nature walks led by Audubon of Kansas and knowledgeable prairie enthusiasts. Sessions are designed for both parents and children. Horseback riding in the hills and a group performance are special features of the day. The finale of the day is an evening concert by Emporia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jeremy Starr with guest artist and renowned cellist Eugene Friesen. This special event will take place at Camp Wood YMCA in Elmdale, Kansas, a world-class, family-friendly facility with spacious, interior, all-weather spaces. www.joyfulnoisecamp.org

Phase II - Booth Hill Casino & Resort

 

Boot Hill Casino & Resort, located on Highway 50 in Dodge City, is the first state-run gaming facility in Kansas. A tribute to the legendary fame of the Old West, the property offers gaming, dining and entertainment in a setting reminiscent of the Wild West era. Phase I of the $90 million project opened in December 2009,
with Phase II completed in March 2012 with the grand opening of a 108 room

Flames in the Flint Hills

 

Flames in the Flint Hills is scheduled for Saturday, April 13th, 2013 at the
Flying W Ranch in Kansas. This event includes fascinating information about the Flint Hills and prairie burning, hands-on participation in lighting and managing the controlled prairie fire of 7,000 acres within the Flint Hills, a delicious (Kansas
beef) steak dinner, spectacular photo opportunities, and music from Tallgrass
Express. The price to participate is $100 per person, and includes all activities.

The Flying W Ranch is working cattle and guest ranch near Clements,
