On June 12, 2004, Anne Frank would have celebrated her 75th birthday. Various activities are organized to commemorate Annes birthday and to emphasize her significance through the years.
From June 12 through September 12, 2004, FOAM, the Museum of Photography in Amsterdam, stages an exhibition with photos from the Frank family photo albums, called Photographs of Otto Frank. The exhibition contains many photos that have never been published before, and presents a unique and intimate historic document. Before the war, Otto Frank was a prolific and gifted amateur photographer and he took many photos of his family, especially of his two daughters. It is because of his photographs of Anne that we know the face of the author of The Diary. After the war, Otto Frank was haunted by the painful memories of the wife and daughters lost to him, and never took another photo.
Born on June 12, 1929, Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager, was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust. Anne and her family, along with four other families, spent 25 months during World War II in an annex of rooms above her fathers office in Amsterdam. After being betrayed to the Nazis, Anne and everybody else living in the annex were arrested and deported to Nazi concentration camps. In March of 1945, nine months after she was arrested, and two months before the liberation of Holland (May 5, 1945), Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen.
She was fifteen years old. Her diary, saved during the war by one of the familys helpers, Miep Gies, was first published in 1947. Today, her diary has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.
A related exhibition, Anne Frank: A Private Photo Album will take place in New York City, at Kraushaar Galleries Inc., 724 Fifth Avenue, New York, from May 21 through July 30, 2004.
